Knowing CPR Can Save a Life
Whether you're CPR certified or not, knowing the steps to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation can help to save a life during an emergency. Here’s what you need to know.
When Is CRP Appropriate?
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can help to save a life when done in a life-threatening situation, especially following an accident.
If someone exhibits the following symptoms, they may be in need of resuscitation:
- They aren’t breathing.
- They are only taking occasional gasps for air.
- Their pulse can’t be felt.
- They are unconscious or unresponsive.
Steps for Performing CPR
Call 911
If you have assessed the situation and deemed the affected person is in need of CPR, be sure to dial 911 before you begin delivering assistance. If there is more than one person at the scene, send someone to look for an automated external defibrillator (AED).
Give Chest Compressions
In order to give chest compressions, stack your hands on e on top of the other in the center of the unresponsive person's chest. Using your body weight, press hard and fast on their chest, being sure to maintain a pace of 100 compressions per minute.
To give you an idea of how fast that is, hum “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees.
Continue providing chest compressions until the person regains consciousness and is breathing on their own or until emergency medical assistance has arrived.
