Every month throughout the school year, Kirby Ambulance does a presentation in the 2nd grade classrooms in the schools in Bement, Deland, and Monticello. We cover the following topics:
- Railroad Safety
- Halloween Safety
- Handwashing
- Nutrition
- Bullying
- 1st Aid Kits
- Bicycle/ATV/Snowmobile Safety
- Calling 911
The goal of these presentations is to make the kids feel more comfortable with the 1st Responders, their tools, and their equipment in the event of an emergency. Another goal is to be proactive and change behaviors so that an emergency situation might be avoided. Feedback from previous students has shown that some of the material presented is both absorbed and used, and to that end, this is a successful program for our community.
At the end of the year, we wrap up the presentations with a Touch a Truck grand finale. We bring in the police car, fire truck, ambulance, and when lucky, the K9 and helicopter. This gives the students a chance to interact with the vehicles and ask any questions they may have.
We are honored to have this opportunity in the Bement, Deland, and Monticello school districts.
