Kirby Wound Care Prioritizes Nutrition in Wound Healing
Center provides nutritional assessments, advises a healthy diet to aid in healing.
This Nutrition Awareness Month, Kirby Wound Care is emphasizing the importance of good nutrition as a factor in wound healing.
Though often overlooked, nutrition is an extremely important part of the healing process. During the healing process, the body is busy adding new tissue, replacing fluids and fighting infection, so it needs increased amounts of water, calories, protein and vitamins.
“Because wound care is essential to the health and well-being of patients with wounds, we must provide patients with the tools they need for optimized healing,” said Kimberly Durbin, RN Clinical Lead. “Nutritional assessments are an important part of what we do.”
After the assessment, the Kirby Wound Care team works in conjunction with a patient’s primary care provider to recommend dietary changes to promote healing.
To kickstart their wound healing, Kirby Wound Care recommends that patients:
- eat balanced meals that include fruits and vegetables.
- drink plenty of fluids, especially those that are caffeine and sugar free.
- include a source of protein at each meal or snack.
Kirby Wound Care at Kirby Medical Center provides a comprehensive approach to treating patients with non-healing wounds. The team features clinicians with advanced training in wound care.
Kirby Wound Care is open Wednesdays 8am-12pm. For more information about wound care or to schedule an appointment, call 217-817-9400.
