Bone Densitometry

Osteoporosis Testing in Monticello

A bone mineral density test can provide a snapshot of your bone health. The test can identify osteoporosis and measure your response to osteoporosis treatment. It is similar to having an X-ray and is completely painless. The test will measure bone density at your hip, spine, and possibly wrist. Bone density testing is offered Monday-Thursday from 8-3 pm. Call the Imaging department at 217-762-1826 to schedule your appointment.

When to Have a Bone Density Test

Bone densitometry scans are recommended for patients at high risk of osteoporosis and osteopenia, two bone diseases characterized by weakness in the skeletal system. You can take the Osteoporosis Risk Questionnaire to estimate your risk of developing osteoporosis.

Doctors usually recommend bone density tests for patients with:

  • A family history of osteoporosis
  • Thyroid conditions
  • Type 1 diabetes
  • A long history of smoking
  • Bones that frequently break
  • Liver disease
  • Kidney disease
  • A history of alcohol abuse

These tests are noninvasive and require very little preparation. During the procedure, you are exposed to x-rays. The x-ray beams are absorbed by tissue and bone. Doctors subtract the measure of soft tissue from the total amount of energy absorbed, and this reading is your bone density. The test only lasts 10 to 30 minutes, and you should be cleared to go home immediately afterwards.
